About Me
—— A photographer who accidentally turned half his life's work into taking photos.
Hi, I’m Laowang 👋
Born in the era of manual transmissions, growing up in the dial-up internet age, I experienced the heart-pounding excitement of a youth marked by the beeping of a pager, and witnessed the rise of digital cameras that replaced film. Life has taken many twists and turns, from marching in formation to snapping photos. What started as a casual click of the shutter button has inadvertently become my lifelong career—who would have thought that a camera would understand my future better than I understand myself?
Twenty years of commercial portrait photography have exposed me to all sorts of faces, from the most dignified smiles to the most camera-resistant souls. But experience tells me: there are no unphotogenic people, only faces that haven’t met the right lighting. In the end, clients almost always say the same thing: “Huh? I actually managed to take such a good picture?”
Now, life has finally slowed down the shutter speed, and my schedule isn’t as packed as it was at ISO 6400. It’s time to change focus, shifting my gaze from meticulously arranged portraits to the everyday life brimming with the vibrancy of everyday existence—the smoke rising from a corner shop, the morning mist on a lake, the silhouettes of people returning home at sunset. After all, photography, though called a job, is more like an addiction I can’t shake. I think the day I really don’t want to take photos anymore, it won’t be because I’m tired of it, but because I’ve finally worn out the shutter button from pressing it so many times.
“"The three most painful things in life: a model closing their eyes, a landscape fogging up, and a camera running out of battery. Welcome to my world, where there is light and shadow, stories, and my ramblings (and my eternal distrust of the weather forecast)!"”
